چکیده
A surface-mounted chirped fibre Bragg grating (CFBG) sensor has been used for the first time to monitor delamination growth within a composite material (a transparent, unidirectionally reinforced glass fibre/epoxy resin double-cantilever beam (DCB) specimen). The specimens were tested using a constant displacement rate, with the delamination length being measured using complementary techniques: (i) in situ photography, (ii) surface-mounted strain gauges, and (iii) the surface-mounted CFBG sensors. The unidirectionally reinforced DCB specimens showed characteristics typical of such material which complicate the curvature of the beams, i.e. the development of extensive fibre bridging and pronounced R-curve behaviour. To validate the interpretation of the CFBG reflected spectrum, the experimentally determined strains

Crack Detection in Fibre Reinforced Plastic Structures Using Embedded Fibre Bragg Grating Sensors: Theory, Model Development and Experimental Validation
In a fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) structure designed using the emerging damage tolerance and structural health monitoring philosophy, sensors and models that describe crack propagation will enable a structure to operate despite the presence of damage by fully exploiting the material's mechanical properties. When applying this concept to different structures, sensor systems and damage types, a...
متن کاملChanges in the Reflected Spectra of Embedded Chirped Fibre Bragg Gratings Used to Monitor Disbonding in Bonded Composite Joints
Recent work has outlined a method for health monitoring the structural integrity of adhesively bonded composite joints based on the use of a chirped fibre Bragg grating (CFBG) embedded within an adherend, but not within the glue-line. In this paper, the reflected CFBG spectra for disbonds of different lengths have been predicted with the aid of a finite-element model of the strain field resulti...
متن کاملAn Optical Fibre Depth (Pressure) Sensor for Remote Operated Vehicles in Underwater Applications
A miniature sensor for accurate measurement of pressure (depth) with temperature compensation in the ocean environment is described. The sensor is based on an optical fibre Extrinsic Fabry-Perot interferometer (EFPI) combined with a Fibre Bragg Grating (FBG). The EFPI provides pressure measurements while the Fibre Bragg Grating (FBG) provides temperature measurements. The sensor is mechanically...

Due to the growing demand for higher bandwidth, employing optical devices instead of electronic devices in data transmission systems has attracted much attention in recent years. Optical switches, modulators and wavelength converters are a few examples of the required optical devices. CMOS compatible fabrication of these devices, leads to much more growing of this technology. متن کاملMetal-packaged fibre Bragg grating strain sensors for surface- mounting onto spalled concrete wind turbine foundations
In this work, we demonstrate preliminary results for a hermetically sealed, metal-packaged fibre Bragg grating strain sensor for monitoring existing concrete wind turbine foundations. As the sensor is bolted to the sub-surface of the concrete, it is suitable for mounting onto uneven, wet and degraded surfaces, which may be found in buried foundations. The sensor was able to provide reliable mea...
